Work gets underway on £284,000 investment to transform Dorchester Sports Centre into one of the South West’s most advanced leisure centres
Work is now underway on a major £284,000 investment to revolutionise facilities at Dorchester Sports Centre which will transform it into one of the South West’s most advanced leisure centres.
Cutting edge immersive technology is being installed at two new studios at the centre. An interactive group cycling studio and a multi- sensory PRAMA fitness studio which will allow members access to some of the UK leisure industry’s state-of-the- art technology while they work out.
The PRAMA studio delivers an intelligent interactive flooring system with integrated LED lights and music controlled by touch screen technology. PRAMA’s lights and music system can be adapted to suit a high energy atmosphere for children and young people or the colours and lights can be dimmed to create a relaxing and holistic environment. Its versatility makes it popular as it is bespoke and can be adapted to a range of work out needs, hosting up to 20 people at an exercise session.
The Group cycling studio has capacity for 20 bikes and it will provide a fully immersive experience led by full trained instructors. The new bike tracks and stores cyclist’s performance data and includes individual touch screens on each bike to aid users through their workouts and also enables them to view class statistics.
The refurbishment which has been made possible through a funding partnership with West Dorset District Council is due to be completed in December and it is not expected to cause major disruption to the day to day running of the centre. It will substantially increase the number of classes available to members and will engage with a wider range of age groups within the West Dorset community.
Dorchester Sports Centre Manager Wayne Long said the new exciting technology being installed is unique to West Dorset; “We have listened to the needs of our members and are upgrading our facilities so we can now offer 110 fitness classes a week. The PRAMA studio is the only one available in Dorset and it suitable for all age groups, abilities and sports teams. It includes a PRAMA kids programme which will inspire and challenge our Junior members with its interactive hi-tech system which is fun, appealing and perfect for the millennial generation which is so familiar with touch screen technology. We appreciate the investment partnership with West Dorset District Council so we can deliver a 21st century fitness experience which meets the needs of our local community throughout the year.”
Cllr Mary Penfold, Portfolio Holder for Enabling, said: “Since opening in 2012, Dorchester Sports Centre has proved a great success with over 300,000 visits made each year by residents of Dorchester and the surrounding communities. However, the centre needs to meet growing demand and keep informed of new trends in fitness in order to encourage residents to get active and stay healthy. The investment in new fitness facilities, which make exercise more fun, is therefore a great addition to a thriving facility.”
