Endurance runners from across the South West will be heading for Shepton Mallet this weekend for one of the most challenging 10k races on their racing calendar.

One of the many runners expected at the starting line for the Shepton Mallet 10k on Sunday 28 October is an inspirational runner from Wells.

34- year- old Rosie Slocombe who has learning difficulties and epilepsy, is a keen runner and earlier this year she raised £2000 for the charity Epilepsy Action after taking part in the Great North Run in Newcastle- upon -Tyne in September, accompanied by her parents.

Rosie lives in supported accommodation in Wells while her mother Kate Sergent is from Stratford- upon- Avon and who will have the unenviable task of getting up at 5am to make it in time for the race.  Kate says although it’s an early start for Rosie’s family they wouldn’t want to miss the Shepton Mallet 10k;

‘We competed last year and it was a fantastic event, very well organised, Rosie has learning difficulties and was the last runner over the line. The sweep runner was lovely and really gave Rosie lots of support and the reception she received when she crossed the line was just incredible! It’s such a lovely run, and a great course. It was definitely worth getting up at 5 am for. We wouldn’t miss it, hopefully Rosie will inspire others to take part.’

The race which is the final fixture in the 1610 Race Series will start and finish at Collett Park in the centre of Shepton Mallett, the route leads runners across the park before crossing Charlton Road and continues past the town’s famous prison. It weaves through the town’s streets before moving on onto scenic country lanes. It’s a picturesque route all on tarmac -  with two challenging hills along the way! Runners of all abilities are welcome at the event.
