National Fitness Day aims to encourage the nation to celebrate the fun of fitness and physical activity across the UK.

1610 which manages 19 leisure centres in Somerset, Devon and Dorset will be sending specially commissioned 10 minute exercise videos out to schools and, nurseries to encourage children to embrace a healthier lifestyle.

1610 is also organising a number of free workshops and fitness events which are open to adults and the whole community across the South West for National Fitness Day.

There is much concern about childhood obesity and lack of physical exercise,  according to figures from Public Health England 1 in 5 children are obese or overweight when they start school and the figure rises to 1 in 3 when they leave Primary school. Obesity is also associated with poor psychological and emotional health, poor sleep, and many children experience bullying linked to their weight. Obese children are more likely to become obese adults and have a higher risk of morbidity, disability and premature mortality in adulthood.

1610 Marketing Executive Paul Stimpson says that the videos are a new initiative to encourage children and adults whatever their age to get active: “ The videos are very user friendly and will show everyone from nursery age children to teenagers that exercise is fun, and easy to fit in to a regular routine. The stats on Childhood obesity are quite shocking and it is well known that being inactive at a young age is a great threat to health and wellbeing as eating a fast food diet. There are simple lifestyle changes that children and young adults which can lead to a prolonged long, happy and healthy life.”
