4 million people in the UK are currently living with Diabetes, which is more than ever before and if nothing is done to combat the disease then the figure is expected to rise to 5 million by 2025. (Figures Diabetes UK). The issue is being highlighted on a national level during Diabetes Week (June 11 – 17) but for one woman in Bideford in North Devon it is a very personal battle. in just 12 months Pam Hunt has been able to substantially reduce her Diabetes medication by a combination of diet and dedicated exercise.

Pam who is 65 was first diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes when she was 50, Type 2 is the most common form of the disease and she did not know that she had it, so diagnosis came as a complete shock.

Since then Pam had been injecting herself with Insulin twice a day and taking tablets to regulate the condition. The medication contributed to some weight gain and she went from a dress size of 12 to size 22. This led to back and knee problems, the need for painkillers, lack of energy and the uncomfortable prospect of coping with injections twice a day.

Pam decided to tackle the problem by joining Slimming World and the gym at 1610 Torridge Pool in Bideford where she attends six exercise classes a week and is part of the Wellness Works scheme. In the past 12 months she has lost 1 stone and 10 pounds more than 4 inches off her waist and she has reduced substantially the amount of Insulin she now injects and no longer needs to take painkillers.

Pam says that the impact of a healthy diet and exercise plan has been amazing and this has given her new hope of beating the disease; “I am thrilled that in just a year I have been able to reduce the amount of Insulin I inject and over time my goal is to be able to stop the injections completely. I still have some way to go on the weight loss but I feel really motivated to carry on and lose more weight.”

Pam combines a variety of exercise classes, including Pilates, Aerobics, Abbs and Kettlebells, and she is now 3 dress sizes smaller and is full of energy with a zest for life: “I am buzzing with energy, unlike when I first started when I found it difficult to keep up in the classes and I had to stop half way through. The 1610 staff at the gym banish any negative mind set and are very encouraging and have egged me on all the way. I have so much more energy now, I have two Boxer dogs and I can now enjoy taking them out on walks more and get the most out of life.”
