Talented swim teachers at Holsworthy Pool have been inspiring more children than ever before to take to the water to learn to swim at Holsworthy Leisure Centre in North Devon.

The numbers of babies and children attending swimming lessons at the pool has increased by 350% in the past 3 years, rising from 50 children to 227children signed up for classes. The Senior Activity Leader and Swim Instructor at Holsworthy Leisure Centre Adam Davey says that he has been working in partnership with the North Cornwall and Tavistock Heartbeeps baby and toddler music development group to encourage parents to bring their baby and toddlers along to Holsworthy to improve their swimming skills; “We have forged a very successful partnership with Jess at Heartbeeps to help babies and toddlers develop their confidence and improve their skills in the water. It has definitely had an impact on the numbers at the school as parents understand that it is important to introduce babies and children to water safely at an early age and to continue to work on those skills so that children are confident and happy swimmers. Three years ago we had around 10 babies attending lessons now the numbers have increased to around 50, we have hundreds of enthusiastic toddlers and pre-schoolers who all enjoy learning and having fun in the water.”

Jess Chu travels with her two children Charlie and Daisy from Launceston in Cornwall to take them for swimming lessons to Holsworthy Leisure Centre. She says that her four- year- old son Charlie has made great progress in Adam’s class and can now swim 15 metres. One year old Daisy is also enjoying her swimming lessons;” Adam is brilliant with the children as he is a Dad and knows how to interact with them. His teaching style is that he encourages them to get used to being under water from day one and how to deal with being in the water safely. It is important that children living near the coast as we do know how to swim, we wouldn’t send them anywhere else other than at Holsworthy for lessons.”

Steph Divito from Holsworthy has been bringing two year old daughter Willow for swimming lessons to Holsworthy since Willow was six months old. She says that Adam has helped Willow to be happy and confident in the water; “The swim school is thriving as Adam is good with the children, Willow is happy under the water as she is above it, he sings songs with the children and repeats exercise with them so both parents and children understand what he is trying to achieve. He explains it all so well which helps a lot.”
