Cardio vs Weights

I have exercised in a gym environment since I was 16 years old, which is when I started working in the Leisure Industry. Cardio has always been my main choice of exercise over the years as I always felt as though you’re working hard and like to feel sweaty by the end of my workout. This suited me through my 20’s and most of my 30’s. When I reached 34, I noticed weight was harder to keep off, long gone the days where I was good for a few days and I would lose 5lbs!

Last Summer I noticed my body shape was changing and not for the better! I was still exercising, teaching classes and eating a low carb diet by this time I was in my late 30’s.  Early this year I did some research on females approaching their 40’s and changing my exercise routine?

Since Spring this year I am now training 80% weights, doing split routines and going ‘heavy’ I am doing 4 sets of 4 exercises per muscle. I work my Leg’s twice a week as these are a large muscle group and burn body fat especially round the abdominal area. Since training on weights I have lost weight as it’s increased my metabolism, lost body fat therefore inches, improved my posture (I feel taller), and improved elasticity in my skin. The fear before was if you lift heavy weights you will build too much muscle, however when you are reaching the big 40 it will have the opposite effect it will make you smaller. I am still doing cardio but making it shorter and more intense such as interval and HIIT Training.

I have shared my knowledge and results with the customers at Torridge (especially middle aged females) and they are seeing results. Here are a couple of examples:

I did a programme for a lady who is mid 30’s 6 weeks ago, she wasn’t overweight. I did her review last night she has lost 5kg in weight and 5% body fat with weights now the main aspect in her programme and reducing carbs from her diet.

Another lady who is in her mid 50’s mainly did spin classes and cardio in the gym; I made her a weights programme. 2 weeks later she came to me and said already her clothes are a lot looser and that she had lost facial fat.

My personal motivating quote when I am at the gym and that I share with customers is:

 ‘If it doesn’t CHALLENGE you it won’t CHANGE you’
